Who knew?

I guess I should have. We're surrounded by great, huge-hearted people and we're blessed for it. I was reminded of that today, even when the news had the DC sniper being put to death and the president speaking at the Fort Hood Memorial. Kasey and I went to our friends Nathan and Brandon's "Officer of the Year" award ceremony at the Elk's Lodge tonight. I asked Kase - what did they do to to merit this award? He hadn't a clue... No matter, we love Nathan and Brandon and wanted to be there to say "good job!" so after work, I met Kasey at home, made him put on trousers instead of jeans, slipped on a dress and out the door we went. We had a lovely meal - exactly what I envisioned we would be served at the Elk's - and laughed heartily with Erica and Debbie throughout; all the while I sat thinking, "why are Nate and Brandon getting this award?" Not to mention, "how on earth does one become an 'Elk'??" Part of my curiosity was soon satisfied and I was humbled. Over 17 months ago, Officer Erik Hite was murdered, leaving behind a wife and baby. As much as I want to say that I never worry about that being me, the reality is there have been many a morning shower that I have sobbed in at the mere thought. Just the vulnerability at how much we depend on Kase is overwhelming. How would we survive? Not just emotionally, but financially? I pray that we would be taken care of by people just like Nathan and Brandon. These two raised over $30,000 through a black band bracelet program (think Livestrong) that they started with their own money to help Hite's widow. I am in awe; which is kinda disappointing because now when Nathan pisses me off, I will have this picture in my head of him and I'll feel like I need to be more forgiving. But thanks for restoring my faith in people guys. We're blessed to call you friends.
